GLOBSEC held a closed-door virtual roundtable on identifying Transatlantic priorities for cooperation in cyberspace

On December 9, participants from the private sector, public administration, academia, and the think-tank space joined GLOBSEC virtually to outline concrete priority areas where the United States and the European Union can scale cooperation to better secure cyberspace in light of a new geopolitical reality. In the discussion led by Anushka Kaushik, Senior Research Fellow and Cyber Lead at GLOBSEC, interventions by experts were targeted at identifying areas of work where progress should be made and clear paths to achieving these. The scope of the discussion was defined by the aim of addressing the consequences of Russia’s war on Ukraine for stability in cyberspace in general and for protecting common Transatlantic interests.

One of the main takeaways from the discussion was the broad consensus that existing narratives on the limited role of cyber operations in Russia's war on Ukraine are largely false and protecting cyberspace will continue to be of significance as the war rages on. Deliberations were held on how to hold Russia accountable for its malicious actions in cyberspace, its persistent espionage activities, protecting energy infrastructure moving forward, and prioritising cyber workforce development among others. The event also reflected on the outcomes of the EU-US Trade and Tech Council ministerial meeting held on December 5 as well as the EU-US Cyber Dialogue held on December 16 in Washington D.C. Outcomes of the focused discussion will also be incorporated in a brief by the GLOBSEC Policy Institute, to be published early next year.
