Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has yielded a litany of lessons for the west, some superior to others. With one year of war approaching, the time for prolonged reflection has passed, and a combination of policy action and radical strategic cultural reform is desperately needed.
Over the last year, Nico Lange, Senior Advisor to GLOBSEC and former Chief of Executive Staff at the German Federal Ministry of Defence, has closely examined emerging conflict trends throughout Ukraine and produced a comprehensive report, “How to beat Russia: What armed forces in NATO should learn from Ukraine’s homeland defense”, featuring his primary observations during his fieldwork in the country.
In this seminal study, Lange breaks the standard group think and outlines the most noteworthy takeaways on the battlefield and society from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Above all else, he argues why the human element, and not just the application of military equipment, is why Ukraine hasn’t lost yet and remains capable of defeating Russia. Futher expert input to the study was provided by General Pavel Macko, former Deputy Chief of General Staff of Slovak Armed Forces and Prof. Dr. Carlo Antonio Masala, Professor of International Politics at the University of the Bundeswehr, Munich, Germany.
