Enhancing the Efficiency of Combating Disinformation: A CEE Perspective

GLOBSEC and its partners across Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) have long contributed to global efforts to counter disinformation and foreign malign influence aimed at undermining democracies and Transatlantic unity. GLOBSEC and its partners continued this work over the past months, culminating in a policy brief that provides a Central and Eastern European perspective on combating the aforementioned phenomena. 

GLOBSEC’s 2023 polling found that the majority of Central and Eastern Europe stands behind the European Union, NATO, Ukraine, and democracy as a concept. However, strong regional divisions are evident, as well as vulnerability to, or a certain level of confusion about, disinformation narratives concerning the war in Ukraine, Western institutions, or democracy. 

Over months of research and discussions, GLOBSEC and its partners found numerous best practices from the CEE region that could have a broader impact if scaled up. The policy brief available below is built, among other things, on these best practices. The policy brief offers recommendations in multiple areas to enhance the resilience of the Western information space to malign influencing attempts. Cooperation between relevant stakeholders, the efficiency of disseminating pro-West messages, AI, social media regulation, or the involvement of academia were all identified as sectors where improvements can be made.
